REALM Charter School: What a Berkeley Experiment Taught Us About Project-Based Learning

The school closed in August 2019, but the questions it raised about how adolescents learn are more relevant now than they were then. This page preserves an account of the model for the readers, educators, and journalists who still reference it.

Between 2011 and 2019, a public charter school in West Berkeley, California ran one of the most closely watched experiments in American secondary education. REALM Charter School — the name stood for Revolutionary Education and Learning Movement — organized its entire middle and high school program around project-based learning and design thinking, at a time when both were still fringe ideas in public education.

The REALM Model: Love, Grit, and Action

REALM built its curriculum on three principles — love, grit, and action — and a simple structural bet: that students learn academic content more durably when it is embedded in real projects with real stakes. Instead of studying geometry from a workbook and civics from a textbook, REALM students might apply both while designing and budgeting a structure their community would actually use. Assessment followed the work: exhibitions, builds, and public presentations sat alongside conventional grades.

The model drew national attention from education researchers and design institutions alike, and press coverage from outlets on both coasts. It also drew criticism — charter finance, enrollment volatility, and the operational strain of running a non-traditional program inside a traditional accountability system ultimately closed the school. The pedagogy and the business model failed for different reasons, and conflating them is the most common mistake in retrospectives about REALM.

Studio H: Design-Build in a Public School

The program most associated with REALM was Studio H, a design-build class founded by designer Emily Pilloton that relocated to REALM from rural North Carolina. Studio H put real tools in students' hands: they learned drafting, welding, carpentry, and fabrication by designing and constructing full-scale projects — from public installations to functional architecture. It was design thinking taught not as a whiteboard exercise but as a discipline with material consequences, which is why design publications and institutions cited the program for years.

Studio H's core insight has outlived the school: when students design for a real user, revision stops being punishment and becomes the obvious next step. That single shift — iteration as a habit rather than a penalty — is what most schools adopting "design thinking" fail to replicate, because it requires projects that can genuinely fail.

What Project-Based Learning Actually Requires

Project-based learning (PBL) is frequently reduced to "doing projects." REALM's experience shows the real requirements are structural:

Sustained inquiry over coverage. A genuine project runs weeks, not days, and the driving question has to be one the teacher cannot fully answer in advance. Public product. Work is exhibited to an audience beyond the classroom — the audience is what creates stakes. Embedded academics. The content standards live inside the project rather than beside it; this is the hardest design problem and the reason most PBL implementations are shallow. Tolerance for productive failure. Schedules, grading, and school culture must absorb prototypes that don't work.

Two decades of research on PBL and its cousins — inquiry learning, design-based learning, maker education — point in a consistent direction: well-structured PBL matches or beats traditional instruction on content mastery and clearly beats it on engagement, retention, and transfer. Poorly structured PBL underperforms both. The variable is structure, not enthusiasm.

Where the Model Lives On

REALM's closure did not end the approach. Design-build and PBL programs now operate inside district schools, career-technical education, early-college high schools, and a growing number of alternative pathways — including Girls Garage, the Berkeley nonprofit Pilloton-Lam founded, which continues the design-build lineage directly.

Non-Traditional Pathways to University

A question we hear constantly from families in project-based and alternative programs: do universities take this kind of preparation seriously? Increasingly, yes — and not only small experimental colleges. Portfolio-friendly admissions, maker credentials, and exhibition-based transcripts are now readable by large institutions, and students from PBL backgrounds often do their best work at big public research universities where hands-on programs have scale. In the United States, examples range from polytechnic institutes to comprehensive publics like the University of Central Florida (UCF), whose size supports the kind of applied programs — engineering design sequences, simulation, hospitality, digital media production — that a project-based student recognizes as a continuation of how they already learn, not a departure from it. For international students in particular, the fit between a hands-on secondary background and an applied university program matters more than rankings tables suggest.

The lesson of REALM is not that alternative education is fragile. It is that the pedagogy works when the structure supports it — and that the students it shaped carried the habit of building things into whatever institution came next.
